Are Google’s AI answers taking clicks away from my website?

Some, probably, but for a local business a lost click isn’t the same as a lost customer. Pew data, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable, found that click-through fell from 15% to 8% when a Google AI summary appeared. So fewer searchers click through to websites when that summary shows. For a shop, salon or trade, though, plenty of the people who find you on Google can call you or get directions straight from your listing without ever opening your site. The real question is whether those people reach you, and that you can check yourself.

What the finding does and doesn’t tell you

It tells you something clear about clicks: when Google shows an AI summary, fewer people click a result. Pew is a research organization, not a company selling a fix, which is part of why the number is worth taking seriously.

What it doesn’t tell you is what happens to your business in particular. It doesn’t say whether the people who didn’t click went on to call a business, visit one, or give up. It’s one measurement of clicking, not a measurement of customers. Treat it as a reason to look at your own numbers, not as a reason to panic.

What it means for a local business

More of the decision now happens on the results page. A searcher may read a summary, glance at your listing, check your hours and reviews, and decide, all without visiting your website. That shifts the weight onto two things:

  • Your Business Profile has to be right. Hours, services, holiday closures and the rest are what people see when they don’t click. A wrong closing time on the profile can cost you a customer before they ever reach your site.
  • The phone has to be answered. When someone decides from the results page, the next step is often tapping Call. If it rings out, the summary did its job and you still lost the customer. A teammate on overflow or an answering backup for your people keeps that call from going to the next listing.

Your website still matters, just differently. Google’s Ask Maps answers questions from reviews, profile data and the business’s own website, so a clear questions page on your site can feed answers even when nobody clicks. We cover that in what happened to Q&A on your Google profile.

Check your own numbers

Your Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks by month; here’s how to find them. Look at the trend, not one month. If website clicks are falling while calls and directions hold, people may be deciding on Google and contacting you directly. If calls are rising but the conversations your team remembers aren’t, you have an answering gap, and that’s the leak worth fixing first.

If your clicks, calls and directions are all steady, this isn’t your problem yet, and there’s no reason to rebuild anything in a hurry.

Related questions owners ask

Does this mean fewer customers for my business?
Not necessarily. For a local business, a lost click isn’t always a lost customer: someone can read the results, tap Call or Directions on your listing, and never open your website. What matters then is whether the call gets answered.
Should I stop caring about my website?
No. Your website is one of the sources Google’s Ask Maps draws on, and it’s where you answer questions in your own words. It may get fewer visits while still doing work behind the scenes.
What should I watch on my Business Profile?
Calls, direction requests and website clicks, month over month. If website clicks dip while calls and directions hold steady, more people may be deciding right on Google instead of visiting your site.
